Safety Markquese Bell #41 of the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have had a busy offseason to this point, signing as many as four potential new defensive starters, adding key backups on offense, putting the franchise tag on George Pickens and re-signing running back Javonte Williams. But the team has mostly stayed out of the headlines when it comes to off-field negativity. That changed on Saturday, though, as Collin County jail records show that defensive back Markquese Bell has been arrested on drug possession charges.

Bell is a safety/linebacker hybrid who is entering his fifth season with the Cowboys. He has played 48 career games after he was highlighted as a Cowboys specialty–an undrafted free agent the team molds into a useful player. Bell is 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, and won accolades for filling in as an emergency linebacker option when Leighton Vander Esch suffered what would be a career-ending neck injury in 2023.

But Bell has had trouble fitting in consistently as a safety, and heading into the 2026 season, his spot on the Cowboys roster is potentially at risk, even before the arrest.

Cowboys Have Loaded Up on Safeties

That’s in part because new Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker is changing the team’s system, and whether big safeties like Bell still fit is in question. The team also moved to sign Jalen Thompson from the Cardinals on a hefty deal–three years and $33 million–while giving PJ Locke a $5 million contract, double what he was getting from the Broncos.

Locke played for Denver while Parker was a defensive backs coach there, and said that Parker’s presence in Dallas was a big reason he wanted to sign with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys also restructured the contract of safety Malik Hooker, meaning he is unlikely to be let go this offseason. The Cowboys are also weighing whether to add yet another safety to the roster during the upcoming NFL draft, with Caleb Downs potentially falling to No. 12 or Dillon Thieneman going at No. 20.

All that is to say that Bell, even without the arrest, was on shaky ground on this roster.

Markquese Bell Has Courted Controversy Before

Bell has courted controversy before during his football career, well before his days with the Cowboys. Going back to 2017, Bell was a four-star recruits and a star of the Maryland Terrapins class. But he never played for the team, having been suspended for “violating the student code of conduct” before his first season was to begin.

Bell eventually wound up at Florida A&M for his college football career after a community-college stint.

The Dallas Morning News reported on Saturday that the Cowboys declined to comment on the arrest. The paper also noted, “The arrest was made by Prosper police. Bell remained in jail as of Saturday morning, according to the county’s jail database. … The charge for possession of a controlled substance is a felony level charge. The charge for possession of marijuana was listed as a misdemeanor.”
