The Man Utd star has struggled for playing time since Michael Carrick took charge.

The 27-year-old was a regular in the United side under former head coach Ruben Amorim but has struggled for minutes since Michael Carrick replaced him earlier in the year due to injury. Mount played in both matches under caretaker head coach Darren Fletcher and featured from the bench in the dying minutes when United defeated Man City in Carrick's first game in charge.

Mount was then an unused substitute for the win at Arsenal before he suffered an unspecified injury that saw him sidelined for six matches. The former Chelsea midfielder returned to the bench for the home victory over Aston Villa and played the closing minutes of their draw with Bournemouth before the March international break.

Michael Carrick backs Mason Mount

Mason Mount is now close to full match fitness and will push to start when Manchester United host Leeds United in the Premier League on Monday night. The 27-year-old took part in the club’s intense training camp in Dublin last week and will hope to make up for lost time in the final weeks of the league season.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Saturday afternoon, Carrick backed the midfielder to play a key role in the weeks ahead and praised his versatility as a huge asset to the squad.

"First of all, it's great to have Mason back, to miss him so quickly after we came in and came together," Carrick told reporters. "He's obviously had nearly two or three weeks of building up and finding, his rhythm, finding his sharpness. It's great to have him back.

"I think his versatility, is a big strength of his. He can play through the middle, he can play midfield, he can play wide and he can do so many different roles. He's certainly a team player, but he's a player that I really like. There's loads to come from him. We've just got to give him the time to get fit again and be patient with that, but he's certainly in a good place right now."
