Alejandro Garnacho says one player at Man Utd was like a ‘big brother’ to him

Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho took influence from many of his peers at Manchester United, but none more than Bruno Fernandes.

Alejandro Garnacho left Manchester United last summer in a £40 million deal after making 144 appearances for the Red Devils.

The Argentina international fell out with Ruben Amorim and made his final United appearance in a Europa League final defeat against Tottenham before leaving Old Trafford under a grey cloud.

After graduating from United’s academy and emerging as a star player in the first team, Garnacho’s career path has not gone as planned, considering his underwhelming 2025 transfer to Chelsea.

Was Garnacho’s ‘attitude’ the issue, or is he just not suited to the Premier League’s top level?

Alejandro Garnacho hails Bruno Fernandes’ influence at Man Utd

Garnacho has struggled to live up to expectations at Chelsea.

It’s been so underwhelming that there have been reports of Chelsea’s willingness to sell Garnacho in the summer.

Since then, Garnacho has taken responsibility for his behaviour at United, in what is the most candid interview he’s done since leaving Old Trafford.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Garnacho was asked about how much of an influence Bruno Fernandes had on him at United.

“I remember Bruno was like, not a Dad, but like a big brother there for me,” Garnacho replied.

“And I remember one thing he said to me one time, he said, ‘The day that I don’t speak about you, saying bad things trying to help you, or I tell you the truth because you’re not doing the right things, things like this, if this day comes, I don’t care anymore about you. So if I do these things, it’s because I want the best for you.’

“And he always tried to help me, and yeah, we make really good friends and the captain also, so it’s always, it was always there for me, and it’s important, yeah.”

Fernandes remains United’s most influential player, but it doesn’t come as a surprise that he has the same sort of impact off the pitch.

Alejandro Garnacho could make first appearance against Man Utd next week

When United beat Chelsea 2-1 in September at Old Trafford, Garnacho was jeered by the Old Trafford faithful but never came off the bench.

That means Garnacho will be hoping to face his former club next week when Chelsea host the Red Devils in the Premier League.

Fernandes and Casemiro scored the goals for United, while Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back in the 80th-minute.

United’s away support will be in fine voice when they see Garnacho again, regardless of his status as a starter or a benchwarmer under Liam Rosenior.
