Rebuilding Rams Could Target Former First-Rounder in Massive Trade

After signing QB Kyler Murray, it sounds like the Minnesota Vikings are heading in a different direction, which could open the opportunity for the Los Angeles Rams to target JJ McCarthy. Meanwhile, the Rams haven’t signed Jimmy Garoppolo, and that likely spells that Sean McVay is exploring alternative options once Matthew Stafford retires. Minnesota has reportedly been frustrated with McCarthy’s lack of ability as the former first-round pick struggled to stay healthy in his first season in the league.

Despite missing the entire 2024 campaign, which led to Sam Darnold having a spectacular season and winning the Super Bowl two years later, the Vikings are unhappy. Unfortunately, after bringing in Murray and veteran Carson Wentz as a bridge, McCarthy’s time in Minnesota might be done. However, the young starter has time to establish himself as one of the best arm passers in the league under the mind of McVay.

Rebuilding Rams Could Target Former First-Rounder JJ McCarthy in Massive Trade

As of this posting, the Rams’ backup is Stetson Bennett. While he’ll get his chance, the Rams need a mobile, young quarterback who could shine in a different scenery. Minnesota might not just be the right fit for him, and it doesn’t mean McCarthy is a terrible selection. He still has potential, and if the Rams continue to salvage the offense like they’ve done with their secondary this past offseason, they should be in serious business.

Something about McCarthy and McVay sounds special as long as the Rams play their cards right. Either way, the future is bright for Los Angeles. McVay isn’t going anywhere, but if the Rams want to make a move now, they should take it and give McCarthy a decent shot to be the next starter for their offense before someone else takes him.

Other Possible Suitors

Carolina Panthers

The thought of the Carolina Panthers trading for McCarthy shouldn’t affect the future of Bryce Young. However, two seasons ago, head coach Dave Canales benched the young quarterback in favor of Andy Dalton after the 1-5 start. Young has shown improvement this past season, but it doesn’t mean Canales won’t bench him again if he shows his inability to stay consistent. McCarthy would be the perfect fit for this offense that has gotten better under Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker.

As long as the team finds one last high-stakes receiver before the 2026 season, the offense should be set for another run in the postseason.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are struggling to find a trade partner for Anthony Richardson after making him available. The team may keep him for at least one more season, but it shouldn’t stop them from targeting a backup for Daniel Jones. McCarthy is obviously the upgrade over Richardson, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the Colts are interested. Jones is under a one-year deal, and if the team likes what they see in McCarthy, they could trade for him.

Pittsburgh Steelers

If Aaron Rodgers doesn’t return, the Steelers wouldn’t need to panic. Unfortunately, they’re playing another waiting game this offseason. The Steelers need to rebuild this offense either way, with Mike Tomlin gone and Mike McCarthy stepping in as the new leader for this group. JJ McCarthy and Mike McCarthy are something to watch out for in 2026 if Rodgers decides to retire.
