Former Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen has been hired by the Patriots
The New York Giants have been busy this offseason. While the team has been upgrading its roster recently, its first order of business involved swapping out its old coaching staff for a new one, led by former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. Since arriving in town, Harbaugh has brought several new faces to town, leading to a handful of folks from the old regime being forced to find new jobs.
One guy who got a head start on his search for a new job was former defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, who was fired midway through the 2025 campaign. It’s taken him a while, but according to reports, Bowen has finally found a new home, as he will be reuniting with his old friend Mike Vrabel as a member of the New England Patriots‘ staff.

The #Patriots are hiring former #Giants and #Titans DC Shane Bowen as a defensive analyst, source said. He is back with Mike Vrabel after a stint together in Tennessee.
Bowen has been working in the NFL since 2016, and he’s spent a considerable amount of time working alongside Vrabel. When he latched on with the Houston Texans in 2016 as a defensive assistant, he quickly was introduced to Vrabel, who was a linebackers coach at the time. Vrabel became the defensive coordinator in 2017 before getting hired to be the Tennessee Titans‘ head coach in 2018.
When Vrabel left for the Titans, he brought Bowen with him. After spending three years as an outside linebackers coach, Bowen became Tennessee’s defensive coordinator in 2021, a position he would hold until Vrabel was fired after the 2023 campaign. Bowen ended up skipping town, too, as he was hired by the Giants to be their new defensive coordinator.
Things didn’t go particularly well for Bowen in New York, as he struggled to find a way to get the most out of the Giants’ talented front seven. It wasn’t much of a surprise to see him get fired midway through last season, and ever since then, he’s been looking for an opportunity to get himself back on his feet. That has come with Vrabel and the Pats, as he was hired to be a defensive analyst for the team earlier this week.

Giants Hoping Dennard Wilson Can Get Defense Going in 2026

With Bowen gone, Harbaugh quickly hired Dennard Wilson to be his new defensive coordinator. Wilson initially replaced Bowen as the Titans’ defensive coordinator in 2024, and he’s held that spot for the past two seasons. Now, he will be replacing Bowen again, as he’s reuniting with Harbaugh after working as a defensive backs coach on his staff with the Ravens in 2023.
The new coaching regime that Harbaugh has brought with him to New York has folks optimistic that the team will be able to take a step forward when it returns to action in 2026. As for Bowen, things didn’t work out for him with the Giants, but now that he has reunited with Vrabel, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him bounce back in his new role.
