Tony Jefferson was kind enough to join BoltBeat for an interview with me this week. We hit on a variety of topics including coming out of retirement, working in the Ravens front office, and Super Bowl expectations for the Chargers this year. You can check it in video form on YouTube here:
The answer that stood out most in my interview with Jefferson were his comments on unretiring. Jefferson had taken an unconventional path. He worked in the Ravens' front office after his first retirement while his teammates kept on playing in 2023.
### _**"And then what really made me come out of retirement was being around the players. Like a lot of those guys on the team, I was on the team with them in Baltimore. Just being around them, going around their on game days."**_

While Jefferson was a scout, the Ravens were on the verge of a Super Bowl appearance before a loss in the AFC Championship game to Kansas City.
### _**"That year, we had went to the AFC Championship. We were one game away from going to the Super Bowl, lost to the Chiefs. I couldn’t get rid of the feeling of being back out there. I was like, 'should I do this, should I not?' I leaned on some of boys, most of them were like, 'you’re washed, stop. Don’t even try to come back bro. Your career is done bro. Leave it alone, you had your shot.' Blah, blah, blah."**_
A particularly funny anecdote in this regard was Ravens All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton even telling Jefferson he didn't have it anymore:
### _**"Hearing that stuff just made me fired up even more. And these were my close boys, these were my boys. Kyle Hamilton was telling me the same thing. He was like, 'bro, hang it up.' They’re all like bro, chill. Alright bro, you’re making me actually want to get back out there! All of that just fed. I ate all that up."**_
Jefferson took the path less traveled and then unretired to play with star safety Derwin James on the other side of the country. In this interview, we talked about the Chargers' current safety room, Super Bowl expectations in 2026-27, and how he's feeling after getting his contract extension done. Jefferson, a San Diego native, also gave me his top five Chargers of all time.
