Chelsea told to sign£85M striker on £300k-a-week wages

Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has sparked debate after reportedly urging his old club to consider a surprise move for former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, who is currently playing in Saudi Arabia. The suggestion comes as Chelsea continue their search for a reliable centre-forward following an inconsistent season in front of goal.

Nunez, who previously played for Liverpool, left European football amid mixed reviews. Despite flashes of pace, power, and unpredictability during his time in the Premier League, the Uruguayan struggled for consistency in finishing and decision-making—factors that ultimately led to his departure.

Desailly’s recommendation is said to be based on CHELSEA’s need for a physically dominant striker capable of stretching defenses. Speaking in recent media appearances, the former France international highlighted Nunez’s athleticism and work rate as qualities that could benefit Liam Rosenior’s system, particularly in transition-heavy matches

‘I’m pleased to see him wanting to come back to European football – it shows money isn’t everything,’ Desailly told Footitalia.

‘A club like Chelsea, or the new Manchester United, would be best for him. He needs to be surrounded by established, confident players who know they’re going to play every weekend and who will give him the ball on the first intention.

‘That’s the small detail – when he makes a run, he needs to get the ball immediately. Otherwise he loses confidence quickly. I would actually recommend Núñez for Chelsea. He’s a very good player, a smart player – he just needs the right environment to perform,’ Desailly added.

‘When Liverpool identified his potential they knew what they had statistically. But when you start on a bad note, the confidence disappears and the consideration from those around you follows.

‘It’s like Dennis Bergkamp going to Inter Milan – things went completely wrong. Or Roberto Carlos in his early days, shooting the ball into the stands. The confidence wasn’t there.

‘That’s what happened to Núñez at Liverpool. But the quality is still there.

Why Nunez Would Be the Wrong Fit

While Desailly’s endorsement carries weight, a move for Nunez would represent a step backward for Chelsea. The club has spent heavily to assemble a young, technically gifted squad designed for a high-possession, structured style of play. Nunez, for all his physical attributes, is often erratic in tight spaces and lacks the composure required to thrive in such a system.

Chelsea’s primary issue is not simply the absence of a striker, but the absence of a clinical one. Nunez’s finishing record in England was inconsistent, frequently underperforming his expected goals. Reintroducing a player with similar weaknesses risks repeating the same problems rather than solving them.

Moreover, signing a player who has already moved to Saudi Arabia raises questions about ambition and trajectory. CHELSEA should be targeting forwards entering or approaching their peak in Europe’s top competitions—not attempting to revive careers that have already drifted away from elite football
