‘I’m desperate to go’: Man Utd star predicts 2026 World Cup will be his'last'for his country

Former Manchester United star Harry Maguire has now outlined his World Cup ambitions after England boss Thomas Tuchel recalled him to the national team.

Harry Maguire climbed back into the England national side during the March international break after his run of form under Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old Manchester United defender featured in both the 1-1 draw against Uruguay and the 1-0 defeat to Japan at Wembley during England’s friendly matches.

Maguire had been a firm favourite in the England team under Sir Gareth Southgate before the former Three Lions manager stepped down after Euro 2024.

Maguire has major World Cup experience under his belt after being a key part of the England campaigns in 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar under Sir Gareth Southgate.

The former Man Utd captain highlighted his ‘desperation’ to play at another World Cup, with Maguire admitting that it would likely be his last one in his career.

“Of course, I’m desperate to go,” Maguire said, as per Sky Sports.

“I think it would be my last World Cup for my country. I’ve been to two. I missed out on the Euros two years ago through injury, which just hurt a lot, really.

“So, I’m desperate to go, whatever role the manager would want me for, whether that’s starting or whether it’s deciding games late on.”

England star Harry Maguire talks up his own ability as a defender after he signed a new Man Utd contract

Maguire will remain at Man Utd beyond the 2026 World Cup after it was confirmed earlier this week that he had put pen to paper on a new contract at the club.

The former Leicester City and Hull City defender has been a key part of Michael Carrick’s plans since Ruben Amorim was sacked as Man Utd manager in January.

“I still believe, even at my age, I’m arguably one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes,” Maguire added.

“I don’t think that’s in question really. That can be really effective later on in games, whether you’re holding on to a lead or trying to chase a game.

“I still think there’s an important part that I can play, that I can help. If that’s the case, I’m sure the manager will pick me if he believes the same. We’ll see.”

Maguire has started in all 10 of the Premier League matches that United legend Carrick had led since the start of his interim head coach reign in January.
