Reports from Spain suggest that Manchester United are ready to trigger the €45 million (£39m) release clause of midfielder Pape Gueye, who currently plays for Villarreal. The midfielder, widely known by his nickname “The Destroyer”, has emerged as one of United’s priority targets as the club prepares for a summer overhaul of its midfield.
According to Spanish outlets, United have been tracking Gueye’s situation closely since the start of the year and view the release clause as an affordable opportunity, particularly in a market where defensive midfielders of his profile often command much higher fees. With Casemiro moving on and the future of other midfielders uncertain, Manchester United are said to be pushing aggressively to strengthen the spine of their squad.
Gueye, who joined Villarreal after completing his contract at Marseille, has quickly become a standout performer in La Liga. His imposing physical presence, exceptional ball-winning ability, and tactical discipline have caught the attention of several European sides, but United are reportedly the first club willing to activate his release clause.
Sources close to Villarreal claim the Spanish club would be reluctant to lose the Senegal international but accept his departure is likely if a club triggers the clause. United’s recruitment department, increasingly focused on signing players entering their peak years, believe Gueye represents ideal value — both financially and on the pitch.
Talks are expected to accelerate in the coming weeks as United aim to complete key deals early in the window, allowing the squad to be settled before pre-season.
Why “The Destroyer” would be a smart signing for United
Gueye’s nickname perfectly reflects what Manchester United have been missing for several seasons. United have lacked a true enforcer in midfield — a player who not only breaks up play but does so with intelligence, stamina, and consistency.
Gueye would immediately bring aggression, structure, and stability to an area of the pitch where United have often been overrun.
His physicality allows him to dominate duels, while his reading of the game makes him a reliable shield in front of the defence.
Importantly, he also possesses underrated technical quality, enabling him to progress play and maintain tempo rather than simply acting as a destroyer
