Marc Guehi refuses to accept Motm award after Chelsea vs Man City - gives it to a teammate

Manchester City made sure to apply severe pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal with a comfortable victory against Chelsea on Sunday. Pep Guardiola's side strolled around Stamford Bridge and closed the gap at the top of the table to just six points, while having a game in hand.

After a closely contested first half, the away team grew into the match and put Liam Rosenior's Blues to the sword after the break. Nico O'Reilly, as he did against Arsenal in the EFL Cup final last month, rose highest inside the penalty area to nod home and open the scoring.

England international Marc Guehi then added a second with a touch and finish that a seasoned striker would be proud of. The former Crystal Palace man controlled a pass from Rayan Cherki and lashed the ball into the bottom corner. Jeremy Doku added a third late on.

Marc Guehi Baffled By MOTM Decision

Gary Neville, who was on Sky Sports' commentary for the match, selected Guehi as his Man of the Match due to his impressive goal and solid work at the back. However, the 25-year-old clearly didn't agree with that decision.

He won eight of his nine attempted duels while making two tackles, three interceptions and one clearance. Neville admitted that the other contender for the award was O'Reilly, but the young defender didn't complete the 90 minutes.

Following his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Guehi was baffled after being handed the accolade. He clearly felt the man who set up his goal, Cherki, was the more deserving candidate. The pair were together for the interview and it appeared Guehi expected to be tasked with handing over the award to his City colleague.

After being given the yellow award by Patrick Davison, the Englishman was spotted giving it to Cherki anyway before they headed down the tunnel. Kelly Cates later confirmed that Guehi had given the honour to his teammate instead of accepting it himself.

Another labelled the Three Lions star a 'top guy and leader', posting: "Guehi giving Cherki his MOTM, top guy and leader."

Meanwhile, other supporters shared Guehi's surprise at Neville's original decision to snub Cherki. "Even Marc Guehi knows Cherki should’ve been man of the match loool," one stated.

One more fan added: "Guehi was flabbergasted that Cherki wasn't given the MOTM by Neville lol."
