'I'm hearing...' - Man Utd's shortlist now down to just two managers as 'favourite' named -…

Manchester United are in the market for a new manager ahead of the summer, and according to Football Insider, their search has been narrowed down to two names.

Michael Carrick is currently in charge at Old Trafford after being appointed as interim manager in January, but he's only on a deal until the end of the season.

The former Middlesbrough boss has done a more than respectable job since arriving, but United could look to bring in a more experienced manager in the summer, taking them into the 2026/2027 season.

A number of managers have already been linked with the role, while Carrick continues to get on with his job, aiming to get United into the Champions League.

Man Utd Manager Shortlist: Two Names

Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick walks to his seat

According to Football Insider's Keith Wyness, United's managerial shortlist has been whittled down to just two names for the summer.

Current interim manager, Carrick, and Germany national team boss, Julian Nagelsmann, are the two managers on United's shortlist.

“United want to get somebody there, and I think it’s either going to be Carrick or Nagelsmann. That’s what I’m hearing. Those are the two options. Carrick has got to be the favourite, he’s doing well. We all know that, and there’d be a real problem with the fans if he didn’t get the job, if they qualify for the Champions League, which it looks like they got a very good chance of doing."

If United qualify for the Champions League, which is looking increasingly likely, Carrick might feel a little disappointed if he's not given the chance to manage them on a permanent basis.

Huge Decision for Man Utd

Sir Jim Ratcliffe

It's a huge decision for United for multiple reasons.

INEOS and the leadership group can't keep making mistakes with managers, as it's cost them over the last few years.

Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim were both failures, and although they got the Carrick interim appointment right, they still need to improve in terms of their managerial recruitment.

United appear to be making smarter decisions under INEOS' guidance, but it's not been perfect on the manager front.

Carrick's appointment has given them plenty of time to make the right decision, so United fans could be hopeful that they come to a strong conclusion.
