Former Chelsea captain John Terry is reportedly set to take over at League 2 side Colchester United, becoming the latest ex-Premier League star to buy a football club. The 45-year-old is set to be announced as part of a consortium plotting a £14million takeover at the mid-table side.

The Sun claims Terry will follow in the footsteps of Ryan Reynolds, Snoop Dogg, and Will Ferrell by owning a football club in the English pyramid, with one insider claiming the Blues legend was really excited about the deal being announced.

Terry will reportedly have a significant influence at the League Two side, who are currently in 13th place under the guidance of former Lincoln City, Huddersfield Town, and Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley.

Terry's nephew Frankie Terry is also on the books at Colchester United, but has spent time this season on loan at National League side Braintree Town.

The Blues' legend is said to be 'absolutely buzzing' to get involved with The U's and is a big believer in the staff and squad at the Essex-based club.

His surprise move into club ownership follows a former teammate expressing an interest in buying the League Two club.

However, Terry's former Chelsea teammate Alexandre Pato withdrew from talks to buy the League Two club back in February. The ex-Brazilian striker had been in talks to buy the U's and was in attendance for their game against Fleetwood Town as a guest of chairman-owner Robbie Cowling.

A joint statement both parties said: "Aspire Media Group has decided not to proceed with the proposed acquisition of Colchester United by Sports Alpha Capital (SAC), the investment consortium managed by Joao Xavier and including Alexandre Pato. Accordingly, discussions have concluded.

"SAC will continue to explore future opportunities within English football while maintaining a lasting respect and affection for Colchester United and its supporters.

"Colchester United remains focused on the remainder of the season and its ongoing ambitions for progress and success."

Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and American singer Snoop Dogg are just two of the big-name stars to invest into EFL clubs in recent years.

Reynolds, alongside fellow American Rob McElhenney, has helped guide Wrexham from the National League to the brink of the Championship play-offs, while Snoop Dogg has invested into fellow second-tier side Swansea City.

It's a surprise move from Terry into club ownership, having been vocal about his route into management, after being overlooked for the Chelsea interim job earlier this season.
