Manchester United seen as best option for Portuguese attacker–Red Devils given hope of cut-price deal

Rafael Leao has been the subject of criticism in the last few weeks and Manchester United have been mentioned as a possible destination.

This season the Portuguese has contributed to 12 goals in all competitions. Despite this contribution more is expected of the attacker.

Question marks have also been raised about his attitude following his clash with Milan manager Max Allegri during the loss to Lazio.

Doubts are now emerging about Leao’s long-term future at the Rossoneri. Gazzetta dello Sport have looked into his situation and have suggested a move to Manchester United could be his best option.

Leao’s value has dropped

The newspaper make it clear there are no ongoing negotiations for the Portugal international. Not long ago, Milan were attempting to renew his contract but talks have stalled.

Considerations is now being made about the player’s future and he could leave in the summer.

Chelsea tried to sign him in the past but ended bringing in Mikhailo Mudryk. Bayern Munich and Barcelona have also shown interest in recent years.

Those clubs aren’t currently in the picture for Leao, but Gazzetta feel Manchester United will be a viable option. This is mainly due to financial reasons and the Rossoneri could accept a fee of around €40m in the summer.

His value has dropped due to poor performances and inconsistency. Milan paid €35m to sign Leao in 2019 and will looking to recoup this. The forward’s wages is also an issue for the Serie A side.

Our take: Risky business for Manchester United

The Italian press is no stranger to linking the 26-year-old with a move to England. SportWitness covered links with Chelsea in the past before signing Mudryk.

It makes sense for Gazzetta to push Manchester United’s name. This is probably to test the waters and see if the Red Devils are actually keen on a deal.

There is no doubt about Leao’s qualities. On his day, he is a game changer and can open up defences. Consistency has often been an issue over the last three seasons, even if he has delivered in big moments.

A deal worth €40m would be a bargain and Manchester United are in the hunt for wide attackers.
