Former Uruguay youth coach Gustavo Ferreyra has offered a glowing assessment of rising star Maxi Araújo, currently impressing at Sporting CP, during an interview with Portuguese outlet O Jogo. Ferreyra’s comments come amid increasing reports that Chelsea are closely monitoring the versatile winger ahead of the summer transfer window.
Speaking to O Jogo, Ferreyra praised Araújo’s rapid development, highlighting his intelligence, work ethic, and adaptability as key factors behind his emergence as one of Uruguay’s most promising talents.
Having worked with him during his youth international career, Ferreyra described the 23-year-old as “a player with the mentality and technical level to reach Europe’s top clubs,” adding that he believes Araújo is only “at the beginning of what will be a very important career.”
Araújo has enjoyed an impressive season with Sporting CP, contributing goals, assists, and consistent high-energy performances across multiple positions on the left flank. His versatility—capable of playing as a winger, wing-back, or attacking midfielder—has made him a valuable asset under Sporting’s tactical system and a standout performer in domestic and European competitions.
Reports in England and Portugal have linked CHELSEA with strong interest, with scouts said to be tracking the Uruguayan across several recent matches. The Premier League club continue to prioritise young, dynamic players with high potential and resale value, and Araújo’s profile fits the recruitment strategy implemented since the club’s ownership change
“Honestly, it’s not a surprise for me. A player like Maxi, with his qualities, capable of playing as a full-back, as a winger, and covering the entire flank with the same determination and intensity, is not easy to find,” he said.
“Because of that, I say he will certainly reach one of the big clubs being talked about.”
Ferreyra then expanded on that versatility, explaining how it was already evident during Araújo’s early years.
“I’ve known him since he was around 17. I had him in the U18, U20 and U23 teams. The level he is showing now does not surprise me. At that time, he played as a winger at his club [Montevideo Wanderers] and as a left-back for the national team.”
CHELSEA’s interest reflects their ongoing search for attacking reinforcements, particularly in wide areas where inconsistency has been a recurring issue. While the club have not yet made a formal offer, sources suggest that internal discussions have already taken place regarding the feasibility of a summer move.
With Araújo’s value rising and his reputation growing, the coming months could prove decisive in shaping one of the most promising Uruguayan talents of his generation
