Manchester United set to make'formal approach'to sign winger who broke Jude Bellingham's record - Report

Manchester United are accelerating interest in Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga.

Leicester City’s youngest ever player Jeremy Monga is wanted by Manchester United, and a summer move could be about to get serious.

According to Teamtalk, Manchester United are set to make a ‘formal approach’ for Monga, with Leicester set to drop down into League One.

Monga, 16, cannot yet sign a professional deal with Leicester. He turns 17 on July 10, and Manchester United are keen on his signature.

It is reported there is heavy interest in Monga from Arsenal and Manchester City too, while clubs from abroad are also showing interest.

Jeremy Monga: The story so far

Manchester United’s interest in Jeremy Monga was reported first earlier in the season, and he is a player the club have been aware of for some while.

Monga made his debut for Leicester at the end of last season under Ruud van Nistelrooy. He was only 15 at the time.

“When players are good enough the age doesn’t matter to me, and they can help the team,” he commented.

Monga has gone on to make 25 appearances for Leicester in the Championship this season, where he became the club’s youngest ever scorer.

His strike also saw him break Jude Bellingham‘s record as the youngest ever scorer in the division.

A move away to Leicester is the most likely outcome for Monga, although they have not given up hope of keeping him.

Monga has already made 10 appearances for England’s under-19 side, after previously representing the under-16s and 15s.

Jeremy Monga fits United’s requirements

A move for Jeremy Monga makes sense from a couple of perspectives.

Firstly, Manchester United are continually looking to invest in young players who can form a part of the club’s long-term success.

Whether Monga is signed for the academy or the first team, he fits the club’s criteria.

United are also keen to strengthen at the winger position.

Monga could provide useful depth at left wing, while eventually blossoming into a key player.

If the club are able to snap him up, it could be a masterstroke.
