Man scores 'own goal' after being arrested ahead of Manchester United game

The Red Devils are set to host rivals Leeds United on Monday (April 13), leading to Greater Manchester Police (GMP) deploying specialist officers ahead of the match.

The force said the deployments, which will also be in place for the Manchester Marathon, are designed "to disrupt a range of criminal activity, including terrorism, while providing a reassuring presence to the public".

Ahead of the match at Old Trafford, GMP said it had already arrested a man who "scored an own goal" when he drew the attention of officers as he was "loudly arguing with someone" while walking past.

The force said when officers spoke to the man, he was found to be wanted for failing to appear in court.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to appear at court and taken into custody.

The deployments of specialist officers are part of Project Servator, which relies on experienced police personnel who are specially trained to spot any signs that someone is planning or preparing to commit a crime.
