Chelsea have no plans to sign 'very valuable' defender this summer despite rumours - journalist

Chelsea are expected to be in the market for a new central defender in the next transfer window and have already been linked with Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi.

In fact, in February, it was claimed that Chelsea were one of the frontrunners for Senesi’s signature.

Senesi has been a key player for Bournemouth this season, so the Cherries will not want to lose him. However, his contract is set to expire in the summer.

What is Chelsea’s best centre-back partnership?

Fofana and Hato couldn't stop City.

Chelsea not planning to sign Marcos Senesi this summer

While there has been some talk about Chelsea potentially signing an experienced centre-half in the transfer window, it does not look like that man is going to be Senesi.

Journalist Simon Phillips is reporting on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that his top source is hearing that the Blues have no plans to make a move for the 28-year-old.

Right now, Liam Rosenior’s centre-back options include Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Acheampong and Levi Colwill.

Jorrel Hato can also play in central defence and started there in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

Despite the scoreline, Hato played well against City, but it is quite clear that Rosenior could do with an experienced and dominant centre-half coming in.

What Marcos Senesi could have brought to Chelsea

In Senesi, Chelsea would have been getting a very intelligent defender. According to Andoni Iraola, the Argentine has a good understanding on and off the ball, making him “very valuable”.

Speaking about Senesi towards the end of last year via the Daily Echo, Iraola said: “On the ball, off the ball, he understands very well also the way we want to play and for us it’s very valuable. I don’t think it’s a big secret.”

All in all, Senesi could be a really smart addition to this Chelsea squad. He has experience, defensive intelligence and will come without a transfer fee.

For whatever reason, though, the Blues do not seem to be prioritising a move for the Bournemouth man. There is a good chance that Senesi will remain in the Premier League, as he will appeal to a lot of clubs as a free agent. But it does not look like Chelsea are going to bite.
