Tottenham are planning to raid La Liga for a talented defensive midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur’s fight for survival took another big blow as they lost 1-0 to Sunderland on Sunday.
Roberto De Zerbi has made a losing start to his life in North London, with Nordi Mukiele’s deflected goal condemning Spurs to their 16th defeat of the Premier League campaign. With West Ham smashing Wolves 4-0 two days before, Spurs dropped to 18th in the table and remained in that position following their poor defeat at Sunderland.
While the immediate priority is to preserve the club’s top-flight status, the N17 chiefs have started planning for the summer transfer window behind the scenes. Business will certainly depend on which division the North Londoners will end up under De Zerbi, but a mass exodus of players looks very much on the cards.
The Lilywhites have a verbal agreement in place for Liverpool star Andy Robertson to join if they stay in the Premier League. They are also seemingly interested in signing a Barcelona talent.
Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado wanted by Tottenham
According to a report from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Tottenham and West Ham are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado. The defending La Liga champions are ready to sanction the sale of their young talent in the summer, with Atletico Madrid also keen.
In his second season at the top level, Marc Casado has seen his prominence plummet. The 22-year-old has started just nine of 20 La Liga games this term, finding himself behind the likes of Pedri, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo and Frenkie de Jong in the pecking order.
The report adds that Saudi Arabia’s PIF are ready to put €40million on the table for the two-cap Spanish international. This is a figure that reflects both Casado’s potential and Barcelona’s need to bring in funds to reinforce their squad in the forthcoming transfer window.
Casado could be a smart acquisition for Tottenham
It goes without saying that Spurs need to be proactive in the market and attract top talent, which will only be possible if they avoid relegation this season. With James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski missing the entirety of the season due to injury problems, Yves Bissouma set to leave the club in the summer, and Joao Palhinha’s loan unlikely to be made permanent, midfield reinforcements appear as an absolute must.
Casado, in that regard, would be a smart signing. A defensive midfielder by trade, the 22-year-old excels in breaking up play and distributing the ball quickly to his teammates. The Spaniard is technically sound, has good passing range and can drive the ball forward with purpose. He’d add balance to the side and enhance Tottenham’s young contingent of midfielders.
Should the North Londoners avoid the drop, we must test Barca’s resolve for their talented midfielder.
