Report: Chelsea ‘leading the race’ for defender they sold just two years ago

Chelsea have not been afraid to re-sign players they have sold and could do the same thing again this summer.

In the past, the Blues have got rid of the likes of Romelu Lukaku and David Luiz before bringing them back to Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku’s return did not work out, but Luiz was able to win the Premier League title after rejoining Chelsea.

Chelsea ‘leading the race’ for Lewis Hall

Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall could be the next former Chelsea player to make a return to west London.

According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea and their London rivals Arsenal are both “leading the race” for Hall’s signature.

Hall initially joined Newcastle on a loan deal before eventually signing for the Magpies permanently in the summer of 2024.

There, the 21-year-old has gone on to become a full England international and one of the top left-backs in the Premier League.

Hall can also play in midfield, adding to the Newcastle star’s appeal. Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly has also been linked to Chelsea, but he has become a key player for Pep Guardiola, scoring against the Blues over the weekend. It would be a shock if he were sold to Chelsea in the next transfer window.

Lewis Hall ideal successor to Marc Cucurella

There is some doubt surrounding the future of Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard’s contract expires in 2028 and he has not ruled out returning to Barcelona.

Cucurella is one of the most complete full-backs in the game right now; Chelsea should be looking to keep hold of him. If they cannot, though, Hall would be the ideal replacement.

Like Cucurella, the Chelsea academy product is capable of both defending and attacking. He has only registered two goal contributions in the Premier League this season but has an average of 1.4 dribbles per game (via WhoScored), which is quite high for a full-back.

In the previous campaign, Hall managed to record four assists in the English top flight. He is one name that should be at the top of Chelsea’s list of potential replacements for Cucurella.
