The latest Premier League transfer news, including fresh updates on Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United and more
The Premier League returned from its lengthy break last weekend and certainly didn’t disappoint, as the title race and relegation battle threw up more twists and turns than a blockbuster animated movie about an affable sidewinder rattlesnake lost in a new city. Hands off, Walt Disney.
Arsenal stuck their head out of the window and took one whiff of the Premier League title before promptly fainting, allowing Bournemouth to slip their way in and plunder all three points at the Emirates Stadium. Manchester City took full advantage, rampaging past an abysmal Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, narrowing the gap at the top to just six points. City, who have a game in hand, and Arsenal will meet at the Etihad Stadium next weekend.
Down at the bottom of the table, Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham ended the weekend in the relegation zone. They limply went down 1-0 away to Sunderland, while Nottingham Forest picked up a point against Aston Villa and West Ham put Wolverhampton Wanderers to the sword with a barnstorming 4-0 win at the London Stadium.
As the dust settles on another gameweek of vintage Premier League football, we’ve trawled through the gossip columns to bring you the latest transfer news:
Arsenal and Chelsea ‘lead race’ for £50m-rated Hall
We begin at St. James’ Park, where Newcastle United look like they’ve got a real task on their hands to keep Lewis Hall at the club this summer. Caught Offside claim that Arsenal and Chelsea are currently “leading the race” to sign the zippy England left-back for a £50m fee.
Arsenal, in particular, are said to be keen on Hall due to his “rapid movement and technical ability” while Chelsea are said to have been following his progress at Newcastle for some time - which does rather beg the question of why on earth they sold him in the first place. ‘An utterly incompetent approach to the transfer market’ feels like an appropriate answer to that one.
In the report, they go on to claim that Mr McBal is highly interested in the 21-year-old gem. Who on earth is Mr McBal, you ask? Oh, right - that’s just an anagram derived from the first letter of the same clubs Caught Offside seem to link to every player of a certain stature - Manchester United, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool.
The 3AM Verdict: £50m is certainly a more palatable figure than the £70mreports from Spain were touting last week. Well, more palatable for potential buyers, at least. The report makes it clear that Newcastle have “no intention of letting him leave easily” but if they fail to qualify for Europe this season, he could well be tempted with a premature exit.
Man United and others to learn Senesi’s decision
For all their notable prowess in the transfer market, Bournemouth have had a bit of howler here, allowing a player of Marcos Senesi’s calibre get to the end of his contract and most likely leave on a free transfer this summer.
A host of top clubs (The infamous Mr McBal will have been in touch, we have no doubt) have been pursuing the Argentina international all season, hoping to lure him away on a bargain deal in July. Now, Italian football reporter Mirko Di Natale has claimed that “concrete” news of Senesi’s desired destination could emerge on Thursday or Friday this week.
He lists Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham as clubs who will be taking a keen interest in developments, as the race to see could seal an early contender for the 2026 summer transfer window’s best bargain.
The 3AM Verdict: With over a month of Premier League action still to go, it does feel a bit premature for Senesi to make any “concrete” decision just now. None of the teams listed are guaranteed Champions League football, although Man United do look a pretty safe bet. If we were Senesi, we’d sit tight until the end of the season before deciding. Even wait until the end of the World Cup, perhaps, to jack up those wage offers.
RB Leipzig skipper of ‘significant interest’ to Liverpool and Man United
This really is going to be the great Summer Of The Left-Back, isn’t it? Liverpool need one. Man United need one. Arsenal need one.... Oh, let’s just stop it there - Mr McBal needs one, we’ll leave it at that. Yes, somehow the Premier League elite all seem to be short when it comes to left-sided full-backs as we head towards the transfer window, and RB Leipzig’s David Raum looks to be a player in high demand.
Team Talk bring news that along with wonderkid winger Yan Diomande, Liverpool have also taken a shine to Raum, who is RB Leipzig’s skipper. Along with the Reds, Man United are claimed to have scouted Raum last weekend, while also keeping tabs on Diomande’s progression. They must have left impressed, too, as the former helped his side keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win against Borussia Monchengladbach, with the latter scoring the winning goal.
The report goes on to detail Liverpool’s need to replace the soon to be departed Andy Robertson, and Man United’s apparent desire to secure an upgrade on Luke Shaw. It notes that Leipzig are keen to hang on to both Raum and Diomande, but we all know the Bundesliga side have a historic reputation as a ‘selling club’ for a reason.
The 3AM Verdict:Along with Castello Lukeba, that’s apparently three Leipzig players Liverpool are after. Why not just buy the lot and rebrand as RB Liverpool? Raum, a 36-cap Germany international, is a player very much in his prime. He’d be an excellent acquisition for Liverpool, Man United, or any member of the notorious Mr McBal septet, for that matter.
