Newcastle United are another midfield down as they head into the final six games of the Premier League season.

The Magpies will be without Joelinton against AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal after the Brazilian picked up his 10th yellow card of the season during the 2-1 defeat away to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The 29-year-old was booked in the 74th minute at Selhurst Park for a challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta. Shortly after, the Frenchman went on to score a brace as Palace came from behind to win.

As per Premier League rules, any player who is booked 10 times in their club’s opening 32 matches is handed an automatic two-match ban.

The visit to South London was Newcastle’s 32nd Premier League fixture of the campaign, meaning if Joelinton had avoided a yellow card, then he would have avoided a ban altogether.

Joelinton has been cautioned in five of his last seven matches. Before that, he had been yellow-carded in just five of his last 18 appearances.

He’ll now miss Saturday’s home match against Bournemouth and the visit to Arsenal the weekend after before returning for the remaining four games of the campaign versus Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Fulham.

Newcastle United forced to ‘readjust & reshuffle’ after Joelinton ban

Reacting to Joelinton’s suspension, Eddie Howe said: “Disappointing, especially with the deadline today - it being the last game [before it reset],” Howe told Sky Sports. “That’s one for Joey, he plays on the edge, he’s always a fierce competitor.

“He’s overstepped the mark once, he’s got the yellow card. We’ll just have to readjust and reshuffle."

Lewis Miley returned from 10 weeks out injured to start in midfield against Palace alongside Joelinton and Sandro Tonali. Jacob Ramsey is in line to take Joelinton’s place, while Howe also has Joe Willock available.

The Magpies hope to have captain Bruno Guimaraes back very soon but Bournemouth could come too early, as suggested by Howe last Friday.

“Bruno suffered, as probably the majority know from mumps, on his return from Brazil, so that's delayed his return,” Howe said. “He will not be involved in this game [Crystal Palace]. I think there's probably a doubt over the Bournemouth game as well for him.

“No injury concern, more just the illness stopped him doing some key work that we needed him to do to be considered for these games. So he may be the game after, but it's important he comes back when he's ready.”
