After a two-week hiatus, the Premier League got back underway this weekend. Arsenal suffered a surprising defeat against Bournemouth, while Manchester City added fuel to the fire by beating Chelsea – but who were this gameweek’s top individual performers?
Spurs fell further into the abyss with a defeat at Sunderland, while Leeds United stunned bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford – here’s who made it into our team of the week.
GK: Robin Roefs
Is Robin Roefs one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League? He proved his worth once again with a fantastic display against Tottenham at the Stadium of Light.
Spurs had plenty of efforts on goal, forcing Roefs into no less than seven saves, but none of their attempts could beat the Dutchman.
RB: Mats Wieffer
Mats Wieffer showed his quality against Burnley. He and Jaidon Anthony engaged in a match-long battle down the Seagulls’ right flank, but Wieffer came out on top.
Not only this, he also scored two goals to give Brighton a 2-0 win on the road – in doing so, their chances of finishing in the top seven were given a significant boost.
CB: Marc Guehi
Marc Guehi continued to prove his status as the best signing of the January transfer window with another faultless display. Chelsea put forth some dangerous attacks in the first half, but Guehi was equal to everything.
He also scored just before the hour mark – picking up the ball in Chelsea’s area, he showed showed great composure to swivel and find the back of the net.
CB: Konstantinos Mavropanos
Konstantinos Mavropanos has been accused of inconsistency – whatever the truth might be, he was certainly on good form when West Ham United obliterated Wolves.
Scored two of their four goals, Mavropanos also made sure to do his defensive work and maintain the Hammers’ clean sheet in a vital win.
