Aston Villa loanee Jadon Sancho wants to return to Borussia Dortmund this summer - but must accept a huge wage drop to land a move back to Germany.

Sancho, on loan at Villa Park from Manchester United, will be a free agent in June when his deal at Old Trafford expires. United have an option to extend his time at the club, but such as been the overall disappointment with how things have gone since his £73million transfer in 2021, a parting of ways is seen as best by all parties.

A host of clubs have expressed interest in signing the 26-year-old, who has shown glimpses of quality during his loan spell this term. Under Unai Emery, Sancho has made 31 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, scoring just once.

Villa would be keen, if the money is right, to potentially keep Sancho, but it's understood that Dortmund are leading the race to sign him back for a third spell, and that he is prioritising a move back to the Westfalenstadion.

Sancho produced some of the best football of his career during his two spells with the Bundesliga outfit, and is keen to go back to the club where he emerged as one of Europe's brightest young talents after quitting Manchester City as a teenager.

But Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has told Sancho that they simply cannot match the current £250,000-a-week he earns in English football - and he will have to accept a substantial pay cut to land a return to BVB.

Sancho is believed to be desperate to head back to Dortmund in the hope of reigniting his flagging career having failed to hit anything like the heights expected when he joined United in 2021.

He had been expected to have a huge role in helping United challenge for big trophies again, but that didn't happen, and his move became nothing more than a nightmare for both parties.

After a bust up with Erik ten Hag saw him dumped on loan to Dortmund in January 2024, he returned that summer to be sent on to Chelsea on a season-long loan, with an obligation to purchase. However, Chelsea ultimately elected to pay United a termination fee to ensure they didn't have to sign him permanently and sent him back to Old Trafford.

He failed to impress Ruben Amorim when returning to United - being made a part of the Portuguese's 'Bomb Squad' last summer alongside former Villa loanee Marcus Rashford, before joining Villa at the start of the season.
