The build-up to the blockbuster clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg has taken an unexpected twist, and it has nothing to do with tactics.

According to RAC1, UEFA have now responded directly to concerns raised by Hansi Flick regarding the playing surface at the Metropolitano Stadium.

In the lead-up to the game, Flick made his dissatisfaction clear over the condition of the pitch, particularly the height of the grass.

The Barcelona manager was visibly uneasy during inspections and went as far as formally raising the issue with UEFA officials.

That complaint has now led to action.

During the standard pre-match coordination meeting between both clubs and UEFA, the governing body provided a clear assurance.

As per the outlet, officials confirmed that the pitch will be maintained at 26 millimetres, comfortably within the maximum permitted limit of 30 mm under UEFA regulations.

UEFA also reinforced that there is an established protocol for such situations.

If any irregularities are detected, they are required to measure and adjust the surface accordingly.

Beyond just trimming the grass, UEFA have gone a step further to ensure optimal playing conditions.

It has been agreed that the pitch will be thoroughly watered both before kick-off and again at half-time, which will be a key factor in maintaining speed and fluidity of play.

For Barcelona, this detail is particularly significant, as their style relies heavily on quick passing and sharp ball movement, something that can be heavily impacted by longer or dry grass.

With UEFA now stepping in and setting clear parameters, the focus now shifts entirely back to football.

Barcelona have got the conditions they wanted. The pitch will be within regulation, properly prepared, and suited for high-tempo play.

Now, with everything in place, there can be no distractions – only execution.
