John Obi Mikel says Chelsea are 'missing' another player as well as Marc Guehi

John Obi Mikel has delivered a surprising U-turn on his previous criticism of Nicolas Jackson, admitting that the striker’s absence has left a void in Chelsea’s attack that no other player can replicate.

Following a season-long loan to Bayern Munich, Nicolas Jackson has maintained a respectable output in the Bundesliga, recording eight goals and four assists despite often being a rotational option.

His finishing remains a point of debate, but his high-pressing intensity and link-up play have been sorely missed at Chelsea.

Under Liam Rosenior, Chelsea’s attack has often looked disconnected, with John Obi Mikel recently noting that Cole Palmer appears lost without Jackson’s selfless movement.

As his loan concludes, his future remains uncertain, as does Chelsea’s summer strategy, with a big decision to make during pre-season.

John Obi Mikel thinks Chelsea are missing Nicolas Jackson

On the Obi One podcast, John Obi Mikel voiced his concern over Chelsea’s current attacking options, suggesting that Nicolas Jackson could be the solution.

“We are missing Nicolas Jackson. What he gave us, no striker has given us. Yes, we are missing Jackson.”

However, it seems as if Nicolas Jackson has already made his mind up on his future, with the striker supposedly exploring other options.

It’s hard to blame him, as he was messed around by Chelsea at the start of the summer.

Another regrettable decision from Chelsea

The decision to let Nicolas Jackson join Bayern Munich on loan has aged as poorly as the 2021 sale of Marc Guehi, leaving Chelsea with two massive, self-inflicted holes in their spine.

While Guehi has flourished into a world-class captain at Manchester City, Chelsea have spent hundreds of millions of pounds without finding a defender with his natural composure.

Similarly, Jackson’s absence has stripped the attack of its vital connective tissue.

Both players represent a broader failure of the project to value functional assets over expensive, unproven names.
