Mikel Arteta: This week is the "biggest opportunity in six-and-a-half years" at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has described this week as the "biggest opportunity of six-and-a-half years" at Arsenal.

Following their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, Arsenal have a chance to put things right, hosting Sporting CP in the decisive second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Less than 96 hours later, the Gunners travel to face their title rivals Manchester City in a fixture that could prove pivotal in the Premier League title race.

Speaking ahead of a potentially defining week, Arteta passionately said: "Fire. I am on fire. That's it, nothing else.

"I am dreaming so much. I have done so much to be in this position, because I know how this club was.

"I just see beauty and opportunity. I just want to get it done for all these people that have been on this journey with us, and because they deserve it, because they have been unbelievable.

"That is what has driven me every single day. I have zero fear."

Arsenal have been at this stage of the Champions League final before. They have reached it in consecutive seasons, but there is a growing sense that this year carries a greater significance.

Kai Havertz's late winner in Lisbon last week ensures that Arsenal carry a one-goal advantage heading into the second leg, and the Gunners also still hold a six-point lead in over Manchester City in the league.

When asked whether this is the biggest week he has had to face in his managerial career so far, Arteta confirmed: "This is the biggest opportunity of six-and-a-half years, yes."

However, he may have to navigate it without several key players. Injuries continue to mount, with Mikel Merino sidelined with a foot injury since January, and and Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard all absent from open training on Tuesday.

Declan Rice was also missing, and is believed to have picked up a knock against Bournemouth.

"We have to wait until tomorrow morning to see how a few of the boys are, and I will make the right decision with them," Arteta said.

When asked specifically about Rice's condition, Arteta remained tight-lipped.

"I don't want to do that [disclose Rice's injury]. We have to wait and see how he is tomorrow, but obviously he wasn't able to train."

But Arsenal have enough talented players to deal with the heightened injury list, and Eberechi Eze, who scored a stunning goal at the Emirates to help send Arsenal into the quarter-finals, echoes that sentiment.

"We all know the position that we are in and the opportunity that we have. We know what is at stake. [We have] loads of confidence and loads of belief in the group, in our team, and it is special to be around. The focus is on the opportunity that we have and taking it with both hands."
