Chelsea are heading into a summer where their midfield planning is already being shaped by uncertainty around Enzo Fernández, and that situation is starting to influence targets across Europe.

The Argentine remains a central figure at Stamford Bridge in terms of minutes and responsibility. However, there are growing signs of instability around him.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested Enzo has hinted at a desire to live in Madrid at some point in his career. That has naturally attracted attention, while also creating tension internally.

There have been suggestions his relationship with Liam Rosenior has cooled, particularly after the manager’s reaction. At the same time, the midfielder is seen as going through a more personal dip in positive influence around the club.

As we covered earlier, looks like peace has been restored, but Enzo created a lot of smoke. And of course none of this points to an immediate exit, but it does explain why Chelsea are preparing for different outcomes.

That preparation has now led them to Victor Froholdt.

The FC Porto midfielder has quickly moved from being a smart signing to one of the most talked-about young players in Europe.

At 20, he has become a key part of Francesco Farioli’s system and one of the most used players in the squad. He has featured in 44 of Porto’s 46 matches, accumulating 3,466 minutes. Only Diogo Costa and Jan Bednarek have played more.

His output has also jumped. Froholdt has seven goals and seven assists this season, already surpassing his previous best numbers at FC Copenhagen. He is also on track to beat his career-high totals for minutes and matches, underlining how quickly his role has grown.

Chelsea interest and growing competition

Victor Froholdt’s rise has not gone unnoticed. In Portugal, Correio da Manhã report Chelsea are among several clubs tracking him, with interest directly linked to uncertainty around Enzo Fernández’s future.

Crucially, this is not a one-club race. The Portuguese newspaper states that sides from England, Spain, Italy and Germany are all following the midfielder. That level of competition strengthens Porto’s position.

Chelsea scouts have already had the chance to watch Froholdt closely. The Blues were among the clubs with representatives in the stands during Porto’s recent Europa League clash against Nottingham Forest in England. That match provided another opportunity to assess him against strong opposition.

His profile fits what Chelsea tend to look for. Froholdt is a high-intensity midfielder who can operate both as a number six and a number eight. That tactical flexibility makes him a natural option in a squad that continues to evolve.

The club has repeatedly moved in the Portuguese market in recent years, including deals for Geovany Quenda and Dário Essugo, which together brought in around £63m (€73m) for Sporting. Froholdt now sits firmly within that same pathway.

Porto set price and long-term vision

Victor Froholdt is not being lined up for a discounted transfer. Correio da Manhã make it clear that Porto will only consider offers close to his £73m (€85m) release clause.

The club’s stance goes beyond simple resistance. There is a belief internally that Froholdt could become the biggest sale in Porto’s history.

The current benchmark sits around €60m, from deals involving players like Otávio and Nico González. Froholdt is viewed as someone who can surpass that figure.

Porto’s preference is to keep him for at least one more season. However, they are also aware of the growing pressure from the market.

He was heavily linked with Tottenham last year, but talks were not concrete and at one point the player was even told to “aim higher” than Spurs. This might be a good chance.

The midfielder joined from FC Copenhagen for £17.2m (€20m), with a further £1.7m (€2m) in add-ons. The Danish club also secured 10% of any future profit, which adds another layer to any negotiation.

What happens next

Victor Froholdt’s situation now depends largely on how Chelsea’s midfield evolves in the coming months.

If Enzo Fernández remains and regains stability, the club may delay any major move. If the current uncertainty develops further, Froholdt is already positioned as a leading option.

Porto are holding firm. With interest building across Europe and the player continuing to raise his level, any club looking to move will need to get close to the full £73m (€85m).

For Chelsea, this is about being ready for whatever comes next.
