Opinion - Chelsea know what they want in a new centre-back - but they already have the perfect candidate

Chelsea have begun their search for a new centre-back in the summer transfer window, but should be looking closer to home to find the perfect candidate.

There has been no consistency at the back for the Blues with either Enzo Maresca or Liam Rosenior in charge. Both have not been helped by the absence of Levi Colwill for the entire season.

There is still hope that Colwill will play again this season for Chelsea, however they are already planning for their centre-back duo next season to include him and one other.

Chelsea have the perfect Levi Colwill partner in Josh Acheampong

Recent reports have stated that Chelsea are looking for height and physicality when it comes to the England international’s partner, and the Blues can look to their current squad at Josh Acheampong as the perfect candidate.

Despite impressing whenever being given the chance to feature, his minutes have remained limited despite the introduction of a new manager.

Acheampong has played just three minutes in the Premier League since his last start against Leeds more than two months ago. Two of those games he was not even in the squad.

In that time, Chelsea have won just one game, conceding 12 goals and looking incredibly shaky at the back in the process.

The youngster stands at 6’3, and while he has featured as a full-back he looks incredibly assured at the heart of defence, and is simply being underused at Stamford Bridge.

There are plenty of big clubs interested in a move for Acheampong should the opportunity arise, and even though they are unwilling to part ways, he may feel a temptation to move elsewhere to get more minutes.

Defenders Chelsea are interested in signing

Chelsea have been linked with a number of Premier League centre-backs as they look to add proven talent to their first team squad at long last.

Reports have stated there is interest in Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, with the latter expected to leave on a free transfer this summer.

There have been cries for supporters to add more experience to their squad, however their illustrious academy has been neglected for too long now.

The Blues will regret it if they continue to refuse to use Acheampong, and have been handed the perfect opportunity to put faith in him going forwards.
