Manchester United are reportedly considering changing their minds about appointing Michael Carrick as their new permanent manager. The Red Devils named Carrick as their interim head coach until the end of the season back in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick has since guided United to third place in the Premier League table, which has put the club in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League with six matches left to play.

The last couple of months has seen plenty of speculation about whether Carrick could get the United job on a permanent basis this summer, and now there has been a fresh update about the Old Trafford hierarchy’s thinking.

According to the i Paper, United were on the verge of offering Carrick the job to become the club’s manager on a permanent basis.

However, the report claims that news of Andoni Iraola being set to leave his role as Bournemouth boss this summer is prompting the Red Devils to reconsider their options.

Iraola has been linked with the United manager’s job for several months, and the 43-year-old will now leave his role at the Vitality Stadium when his contract expires at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen what decision United will make when it comes to the direction of the club from the summer, with the outcome of the season likely to play a key role in the discussions.

United are in third place in the Premier League table and level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa after their 2-1 defeat to Leeds on Monday night.

Liverpool are three points further back in fifth, while Chelsea are seven behind United in sixth place, which is currently outside the Champions League qualification spots.

Iraola is not the only manager in the Premier League set to leave their current job amid rumours of being linked with the United hotseat.

Oliver Glasner is rumoured to be a contender, and has already announced that he will leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires at the end of the season.
