Jamie Carragher says under-appreciated Man Utd player was a better passer than Paul Scholes

Jamie Carragher has named Steven Gerrard the best Premier League midfielder of all time, but revealed that the Liverpool legend is not the best passer he's ever seen.

Carragher ranks best Premier League midfielders of all time

It's always a controversial debate, isn't it? Passing range, goals, assists, Premier League medals and Champions League medals all come into the conversation when debating the best midfielders in the history of England's top tier - resulting in several different answers.

For Carragher, however, the answer is clear. The former Liverpool star didn't hesitate to name Gerrard as the best Premier League midfielder of all time, even if he never took his boyhood club to title glory.

Carragher's top 10 PL midfielders

1. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

2. Roy Keane (Man Utd)

3. Kevin De Bruyne (Man City)

4. Patrick Vieira (Arsenal & Man City)

5. Frank Lampard (Chelsea & Man City)

6. N'Golo Kante (Leicester & Chelsea)

7. Paul Scholes (Man Utd)

8. Yaya Toure (Man City)

9. Rodri (Man City)

10. Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal & Chelsea)

It's a list that will undoubtedly split opinion. Some will argue that Kevin De Bruyne should be in top spot, let alone inside the top two. After all, he's the only player to have reached Thierry Henry's 20-assist mark in a single season.

Meanwhile, there's an argument to be made about Paul Scholes' place below N'Golo Kante.

Where does Man City icon Kevin De Bruyne rank?

The argument could go from there, but Carragher has taken his pick, telling Monday Night Football after handing Gerrard top spot: "The thing I always said about Stevie is that we've gone through this list of players and said the strength of certain players. The strength I always say about Stevie is his strength was that he didn't have a weakness."

It's hard to argue against Carragher's verdict on Gerrard, but that's not to say the former Liverpool captain was the best at everything in his position. In fact, Carragher has claimed that he's not the best passer that he's seen in the Premier League.

Carragher names Keane best passer he's ever seen

That praise, instead, was reserved for Roy Keane. The Manchester United legend, as far as Carragher is concerned, is the best passer that he's ever seen in the Premier League - better than both Gerrard and Scholes.

"I don't think anybody on that list was better than Roy Keane at finding his No.10. That play between the lines. That is the best ball in football for a midfield player. That's what hurts opposition - getting it into Eric Cantona in those positions, into Dwight Yorke, into Teddy Sherringham.

"For me, looking at that list, there's lots of different players. I don't think anybody ran a game better than Roy Keane and everything went through him in midfield."

It's high praise from Carragher and it's hard to argue against it.

Whilst Keane built up a reputation as the Premier League's chief hard-man, the former defender suggested his technical ability is up there with the best that English football has ever seen - and under-appreciated due to his image as the enforcer and leader.
