Manchester United midfielder Casemiro is set to leave the Red Devils in the summer but his promise could be about to come true three years on. The Real Madrid icon was reported to have text his agent in 2023 promising to fix their problems in light of a sobering defeat at Brentford for Erik ten Hag.

As he gears up to leave Old Trafford upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season, United are on the cusp of returning to Europe's top table as they're in the driving seat for Champions League qualification. After enduring a turbulent time at the Theatre of Dreams, Casemiro's United purple patch has come at the perfect time as he has made some key contributions to keep their European hopes alive.

According to a report from the Telegraph in 2023, United's turgid start to the season that saw defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford motivated the five-time Champions League-winner to swap Madrid for Manchester.

The Brazil international completed a £70 million summer move to the Premier League as he departed Los Blancos following a trophy-laden spell in Madrid. Casemiro's time in the Spanish capital came to an end after Madrid won the race to sign Aurelien Tchouameni from AS Monaco, and his arrival threatened the midfielder's involvement amid the prospect of Casemiro's playing time diminishing.

Following a dour 4-0 defeat to the Bees, the then-30-year-old was said to have text his agent: "Tell them I’ll fix this." Casemiro's career across his four-year contract in the North West has been far from smooth-sailing after coming in for criticism from the likes of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.

The former Liverpool defender, in particular, offered a chastening reflection of the Brazilian's time at Old Trafford when he urged Casemiro to leave the Premier League. However, this season's heroics have led Carragher to eat his own words and admit that the midfielder has proved him wrong.

Despite equalling a career-high goals total for the season in all competitions, seven - all of which coming in the Premier League this season, he will bid farewell to United after finally achieving what he set out to do in transforming the clubs' fortunes.

Announcing his departure, he said: "I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life. From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.

“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months.

"We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed."

In a recent question and answer with the club, he added: "The affection they have for the club is what I will miss most. Of course, the club, but the fans are so connected to the club regardless of the result.

"Next game, they will be there supporting the players and the club, that is what I will miss most."
