Questions over Mikel Arteta's future at Arsenal will be raised if they surrender their lead in the Premier League to Manchester City. However, they should not replace him with Cesc Fabregas.
Mundo Deportivo has reported that (translated from Spanish) "In the case that Arteta would not continue at Arsenal next season. The club's management already has the ideal candidate to replace him: Cesc Fàbregas."
Arsenal had a disappointing result, losing to AFC Bournemouth last Saturday, which opened up the title race. City are now just six points behind the Gunners, with Pep Guardiola's side having a game in hand and facing Arsenal this Sunday.
It had looked like this would be the season that the Gunners would finally land the Premier League title after being runners-up in the last three seasons. However, it could be that they 'bottle' it again.
Cesc Fabregas is not the man to replace Mikel Arteta
Arteta has done a good job since he became Arsenal manager to get his side in contention to win their first Premier League title since the 2003/04 season. However, as he has only won one FA Cup and two Community Shields since being appointed their manager in 2019, there are expectations that he needs to deliver more silverware.
More trophies will likely come if they have patience with Arteta, as they have come so close in recent campaigns. Managers are not given time these days, and it would be a mistake to chop and change him with Fabregas.
Fabregas is earning a good reputation as a manager since he took over at Como in 2024 after spells as the club's assistant and caretaker boss. He currently has them fifth in Serie A, but to take over at Arsenal would be a huge jump at this early stage in his managerial career.
Appointing Fabregas would also be an unpopular move with Gunners supporters. He came through the ranks at Arsenal, won the FA Cup with them, and went on to captain the side. Fabregas then returned to his hometown club of Barcelona, and there are reports that he forced the move through. After his spell at Barca, he joined Arsenal's London rivals, Chelsea, and many Gunners fans have still not forgiven him for this.
Fabregas was subject to many boos when he returned to the Emirates in a Chelsea shirt. Therefore, he would likely not be welcomed back with open arms if he were appointed Arsenal manager.
