How Marcus Rashford fared as Barcelona crashed out of Champions League quarter-finals

It was a disappointing night for Marcus Rashford and Barcelona after being eliminated from the Champions League quarter-finals.

Atletico Madrid reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nine years after beating Hansi Flick’s Barcelona side 3-2 on aggregate.

Diego Simeone’s men had a two-goal lead going into the game after winning the first leg 2-0, but that advantage was cancelled out within 25 minutes as Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres got their names on the scoresheet.

Ademola Lookman scored Atletico Madrid’s only goal on the night to eliminate La Liga rivals Barcelona, even though Flick brought on both Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski in the second half.

Marcus Rashford fails to impact Champions League tie vs Atletico Madrid

It was 2-1 (on the night) when Rashford was brought on to replace Fermin López.

Along with Lewandowski, the United loanee was tasked with turning the game in Barcelona’s favour, but Atletico Madrid’s defence was resilient in the closing stages of the match.

Rashford provided an outlet on the left wing, but he struggled against Nahuel Molina after managing 17 touches and failing to record a single successful dribble.

The game didn’t appear to suit Rashford because he was unable to match the intensity shown by the Atletico Madrid players.

Following their 2-1 defeat on Tuesday night, Barcelona’s focus will now shift to winning La Liga. Rashford will also use this period to prove he’s worthy of a permanent deal at Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid will face Arsenal or Sporting CP in the Champions League semi-finals.
