Pep Guardiola still believes that Arsenal is the best team on the continent despite their recent slip-ups. The Manchester City manager told Sky Sports, “Arsenal have been the best team in this country, in Europe, so far today... Beating Arsenal once is so difficult!"
It had looked like Arsenal were the best team in England as they were comfortably leading the Premier League. It had looked like Mikel Arteta's side was to finally lift the title after being runners-up in the last three seasons.
Unfortunately for Gunners fans, they slipped up against AFC Bournemouth last weekend. City are now just six points behind the leaders, with a game in hand and play Arsenal this Sunday. There is no doubt that Guardiola is playing mind games ahead of this fixture by flattering his opposition.
The belief that Arsenal were the best English team was also dashed when they lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final. They then went on to lose to Southampton of the Championship in the FA Cup.
Arsenal should no longer be considered the best in England and Europe
Earlier in the campaign, Arsenal could have also been considered the best European team as they topped the Champions League's group phase. They won all eight of their fixtures before the knockout stages.
The Gunners then defeated Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16, but only beat Sporting CP thanks to a late Kai Havertz goal in the first leg of their quarter-final tie. Despite this, Arsenal should hold onto their lead when they meet in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium tonight.
The best team in England will no doubt be City if they defeat the Gunners on Sunday. Should they win their game in hand, then they will be level on points with Arsenal and have the momentum to win the league. Guardiola's side could do the domestic treble this campaign. They already have the EFL Cup, and are in a great position to make it to the FA Cup final as they face Southampton in the semi-finals.
As for who is the best team in Europe, many fans will think that it is Bayern Munich after they defeated Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu last week. Vincent Kompany's side are heavy favorites to win the Champions League this season. The competition's defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain, should also be considered, as they have just defeated Liverpool to make it to the semi-finals.
