Berta in talks: £61m England star now wants to join Arsenal, he's a big Trossard upgrade -…

The one big problem at Arsenal right now is their forward line. Long gone are the days of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli tearing Premier League defences to shreds.

Back in 2022/23, they scored 29 top-flight goals between them. Fast forward to 2025/26 and they have netted just seven. While there are still hopes that Saka will return to the form that has made him one of Europe's best wingers, Martinelli is skating on thin ice.

As is Leandro Trossard. The Belgian is still without a goal in 2026. Is it really any surprise that Mikel Arteta's men are finding life difficult in attack?

Across their last four matches in all competitions, they have found the net on just three occasions.

As a result, upgrades must be sought during the summer transfer window.

How Arsenal can bolster their attack in the transfer window

It is of utmost importance in the upcoming window that Arteta and Andrea Berta find a way to bolster the club's forward ranks.

In the wide areas, a number of names have already been mentioned, with PSG superstar Kvicha Kvaratskhelia perhaps the most exciting, albeit unlikely transfer that could occur.

In the past, Kvaratskhelia's teammate in Paris, Bradley Barcola, has also been linked. As has Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers.

Arsenal's most expensive signings of all time

The Gunners have spent generously in recent years.

Continuing that Premier League theme, Anthony Gordon is another player on Arsenal's radar.

That's according to TEAMtalk who report this week that talks have started between Gordon's camp and the Gunners recruitment team. During conversations, representatives of the Newcastle United winger have told Arsenal that he 'fancies' a move to north London and would love the chance to work with Arteta.

A Gordon

The news comes amid reports linking Gordon with a move to Bayern Munich. Sky German's Florian Plettenberg took to social media earlier this week to reveal that the Bundesliga side had begun talks to prise the Englishman away from St James' Park.

Plettenberg noted that a bid of around £61m was being prepared by Bayern who hope to bring Gordon in as competition for Luis Diaz.

That said, Gordon currently favours a move to Premier League title contenders, Arsenal.

How Gordon compares to Leandro Trossard

Fan opinion surrounding Gordon in recent weeks has not been favourable. That's fair enough, really, particularly when you consider the sort of season he is having.

It's a very similar one to Martinelli who has struggled domestically but shone in Europe, scoring six Champions League goals in ten games.

In comparison, Gordon has ten goals in continental action from 12 outings, famously netting against Barcelona in matchweek one and then bagging four goals in one game against Qarabag. In the Premier League, the England international has just six goals to his name.

So, on that evidence, there is rightly some scepticism regarding a move. Still, he'd be a big upgrade on Trossard, who simply has not been at the race.

The Belgian has had a strange season. During his first 22 matches of the season, he netted eight goals and supplied six assists. Yet, in his last 20 appearances for Arsenal, he has not scored a single goal.

Gyokeres-Trossard-Arsenal

By comparison, Gordon has really found form in 2026, scoring 11 times in 23 outings for the Toon. In total this season, he has beaten the goalkeeper on 17 occasions, one fewer than Viktor Gyokeres and a tally that equals Trossard's best seasonal haul that came in 2023/24. He had a productive year last time out too with nine goals and seven assists in 42 games.

Still only 25, there is a belief that the Newcastle wide man could get even better and while it may not be the game-changing signing that elevates the entire squad, there is no denying that he is an upgrade on Arsenal's floundering Belgian forward.

He's got pace to burn, he's incredibly direct and crucially, unlike plenty in Arteta's attacking line this term, he loves to take on a player and create something. That said, at over £60m, there may well be better options about.
