The terrible reason sporting directors are considering keeping Liam Rosenior, even without…

Chelsea are going to try and keep Liam Rosenior in place even if the Blues don’t make it into the Champions League.

The Athletic are the latest outlet to claim that Liam Rosenior’s job will be safe no matter what happens in the remainder of this season.

Of course many have pointed out that the same thing was said about Graham Potter in a similar situation a couple of years ago. And nobody would be surprised if Rosenior ends up being sacked despite these briefs.

But we suspect that the situation is a little different to the one Potter was in. The fact that Rosenior arrived in January means that even by the end of the season he won’t have had much time in the job. Rightly or wrongly, that will probably be enough to save him, even without Champions League football.

Sporting structure could keep manager just to protect themselves

The other factor is how the sporting directors in charge of the decision will feel about protecting themselves. Every manager appointed and then sacked in short order is a black mark against their name. With Enzo Maresca they can point to his talks with Man City and his quite obvious attempts to self-sabotage and say they had no choice.

That won’t be the same with Rosenior, who is doing all he can to stay. To sack him just months after appointing him would be the biggest admission of their failures since Potter, and they will do all they can to avoid that.

In other news…

Simon Jordan is a fan of Liam Rosenior, but is also very clear on why it was a mistake to appoint him as Chelsea boss in this moment.

A former Premier League striker has been speaking about John Terry, claiming the defender was “head and shoulders” above his peers.
