Opinion: Diego Simeone rubs salt in Everton wounds in post-match Barcelona interview

Everton have made countless transfer blunders over the last decade.

Farhad Moshiri’s reign in charge saw Everton deploy a scattergun approach to both recruitment and player sales.

What is your prediction for this weekend’s Merseyside Derby? 🫣

Three points would be MASSIVE! 💪

The Toffees are still feeling the effects of some of Moshiri’s decisions, and perhaps the most notable transfer mistake was the sale of Ademola Lookman.

Since leaving Everton, Lookman has established himself as one of the best wingers in Europe, and now Diego Simeone has heaped further praise on the Atletico Madrid star.

Diego Simeone can’t believe how good former Everton star Ademola Lookman is

Lookman has made a blistering start to his Atletico Madrid career, registering 10 goal involvements in 17 appearances.

The Nigeria international was once again on the scoresheet last night, as he netted against Barcelona to help Atleti reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Speaking post-match, Simeone rubbed salt in Everton’s wounds, explaining just how good the former Toffees winger is.

“He continues to evolve completely, improving tremendously defensively, with a greater impact on the team,” the Argentine manager stated.

“He has everything offensively; we’ve never had players of that calibre. We’re committed to playing with four forwards, even though some say Giuliano is an attacking midfielder or full-back.

“Lookman is breathtaking; he has so much more to offer. I saw it with Nigeria, and that’s what I want from him.”

What is the better Merseyside Derby memory? 🤩

In fairness to Everton, few would’ve predicted Lookman to reach these heights when he was sold in 2019.

Leicester made the same mistake, as they decided against making his loan move permanent for just £14m in 2022.

Either way, it does make you think what could’ve been if the Toffees had kept Lookman.
