Manchester United goalkeeper Darlington Osuchukwu stands as the only player from a non-Spanish club selected in Spain’s U17 squad ahead of the European Championship.
Osuchukwu now joins a side chasing history. Spain’s national under-17 football team targets a record-extending 10th title, already two clear of Portugal’s national under-17 team—a reminder of the Iberian dominance of the competition.

Yet dominance has not translated into recent success. Spain has gone nine years without lifting the trophy, during a period that has produced six different winners from five nations—Portugal, the Netherlands (twice), Germany, Italy, and France.
The draw offers opportunity. Spain enters a group alongside hosts Estonia, Belgium, and Croatia—none of whom have ever lifted the trophy.
The other group presents a far sterner test, featuring Denmark, France, Italy, and Montenegro.
Who is Darlington Osuchukwu?
At just 16—turning 17 on November 18—Osuchukwu has yet to feature for United’s under-18s, but he has already stepped into the Spain national under-17 football team setup.
He made his debut in November 2025, starting in a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic national under-17 football team.
Two more appearances followed. A commanding 7-0 victory against the Finnish national under-17 football team in the Algarve Cup, and then a 3-0 win over the Scottish national under-17 football team in UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying—his most recent outing.
Osuchukwu had previously featured for the England national under-16 football team, but he switched allegiance to his birth nation after failing to make a competitive appearance at that level.
At club level, Manchester United included him on the under-18s bench earlier in the season, though he has spent the majority of his time with the under-16s.
His trajectory points upward. The 2026/27 season could well mark his first sustained step into the club’s higher age groups, with the 16-year-old expected to be handed a debut in the coming campaign.

Initially, United navigated a competitive group featuring FC Groningen, Girona, Wycombe Wanderers, and Valencia, eventually finishing third. That placement then pushed them into a crossover bracket alongside Wycombe, as well as Group B’s third- and fourth-placed sides—Birmingham City and Gimnastic de Tarragona.
They dispatched Gimnastic de Tarragona in the semi-finals, with goals from Jodie Nganga and Pharell Silvestre, before edging past Birmingham City on penalties in the final.
Osuchukwu now prepares to step beyond the U16 level, with a move into the U18 setup firmly on the horizon for next season.
