Arsenal progressed to the last four of the Champions League following a 1-0 aggregate win over Sporting CP.
The Gunners had a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg at the Estadio Jose Alvalade last week.
A draw was sufficient at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal managed to comfortably hold out against Sporting CP for the same.
Declan Rice stood out with another captain’s performance in the heart of the midfield.
However, it was Martin Zubimendi who was handed the man of the match after a much-improved performance.
The Spaniard had a tough outing against Bournemouth last weekend, winning just 38 percent of his overall duels.
There was a vast improvement against the Portuguese champions last night.
Zubimendi won 100 percent of his duels contested (6/6). He also made six recoveries, one tackle and two clearances.
The midfielder completed just 76 percent of his passes last weekend, but his accuracy was up to 89 percent last night.
The 27-year-old had 67 touches in the game and got the chance to redeem himself after last weekend’s poor showing.
Arsenal have now reached the Champions League semi-final, where they will face Atletico Madrid.
Meanwhile, the immediate focus will shift to the Premier League with a huge clash at Manchester City on Sunday.
Arsenal have a six-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table, but the Cityzens still have a game in hand.
A defeat at the Etihad this weekend would mean the title could be decided on goal difference if both teams win thereon.
The Gunners will be desperate to avoid such a scenario, and they must return from Manchester with at least a draw.
Arsenal have not won a game at the Etihad since January 2015.
Zubimendi and Rice must produce a strong showing in midfield to break the club’s long wait for a win at the stadium.
