Manchester United are leading the race to sign Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester City, according to reports.
The Old Trafford side are said to have identified the Danish international as a potential option to reinforce their midfield this summer, along with Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson.
United are in the market for a new player in the middle of the park, with Casemiro’s end-of-season departure confirmed, and could end up moving for two new names.
Manuel Ugarte has also been heavily linked with an exit in recent months and is believed to have attracted interest from Italian clubs ahead of the summer.

According to Football Insider, Hjulmand is ‘pushing’ for a move to the Premier League after the season, having spent the last three years in Portugal.
The 26-year-old, praised as an 'absolute monster', was instrumental in Sporting’s league-winning campaigns in 2024 and 2025, and was made club captain in the summer of 2024.
Hjulmand has also been a key figure in Sporting’s Champions League run this season, with the Portuguese side reaching the quarter-finals, where they lost 1-0 on aggregate to Premier League leaders Arsenal.
After missing the first game due to suspension, Hjulmand played the full 90 minutes in the goalless draw in the second leg at the Emirates on Wednesday.
United are believed to be ahead of City in the race for Hjulmand at the moment, with the Dane not seen as a top priority for Pep Guardiola’s side, who are aiming to secure Anderson’s signature.
The Old Trafford side were heavily linked with a move for the Sporting captain during Ruben Amorim’s era at the club.
Amorim signed Hjulmand for Sporting from Italian side Lecce in the summer of 2023.

With his Old Trafford exit confirmed, Casemiro could be joining forces with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami this summer.
According to Brazilian media, the 34-year-old has already reached an agreement to join the MLS side on a two-year contract, with an option to extend the agreement for a further season.
Casemiro has been a key player for United under interim boss Michael Carrick, starting every Premier League game since his appointment in January.
The 34-year-old scored United’s only goal in their 2-1 home defeat to Leeds United on Monday, registering his 10th goal involvement of the top-flight campaign.
