Jason Cundy points to Harry Maguire as the blueprint for Chelsea's rebuild

Jason Cundy insists Chelsea are crying out for a ‘figurehead’ like Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.

Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday to face a sixth-placed Chelsea side.

A win for Michael Carrick’s side would see United extend their lead over Chelsea to 10 points in the Premier League, with the race for Champions League qualification heating up.

United will be without key personnel at centre-back for the trip to West London, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez ruled out due to suspensions.

Jason Cundy questions Chelsea leadership with praise for Man Utd’s Harry Maguire

According to former Chelsea defender turned pundit, Jason Cundy, the Blues need a player like Maguire.

Maguire recently signed a new contract at United at the age of 33, after proving to be the best defender at the club since Michael Carrick returned as interim head coach at the beginning of January.

United were without Maguire on Monday night as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Leeds, and they will be without the England international for the trip to Chelsea on Saturday.

Chelsea have endured a difficult start under Liam Rosenior, conceding 34 goals and keeping one clean sheet in the league since replacing Enzo Maresca.

Cundy has told talkSPORT that Chelsea needs a player like Maguire, amid concerns over the leadership in the dressing room.

“Maguire has had a brilliant couple of weeks recently, he’s got himself in the England squad, there’s a chance he goes to the World Cup,” Cundy said.

“There are moments in games where I look for experience, there’s Moisés Caicedo and Marc Cucurella, but they did not look like the players I know they are. The game ends up getting ripped away from us.

“At times it’s not just on the pitch but also in the dressing room, there’s no figurehead.”

Man Utd can do the double over Chelsea

Following United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in September, the Red Devils have a chance to do the double over their London rivals.

Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro scored the two goals, before the latter was sent off leading up to the half-time whistle.

A win on Saturday would see United complete the Premier League double over Chelsea for just the second time since the 2019/20 campaign.

Three points would not only see United remain in third place, but it would also come as a major blow to Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification.
