Chelsea are on the cusp of their most important transfer window in years. Get it wrong, and the BlueCo project may never recover. Get it right, and it could be saved.
The west London giants looked to be on the right trajectory after their Club World Cup victory last year, but their business during the summer window saw them arguably become a worse team.
Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian and Jorrel Hato have all been encouraging signings, however Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho have flopped spectacularly, while Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr have barely featured.
This summer, Chelsea must be better.
The early indications suggest that a change of strategy is set to occur, with the club’s owners finally willing to alter their flawed plan of simply signing young players with potential. Additional experience will reportedly be targeted as the Chelsea board aim to build a squad capable of fighting towards the top of the Premier League table yet again next season.
Whether or not that actually happens is another question, while the current malaise at Stamford Bridge means Chelsea may not be able to attract their desired targets.
A slump in form has seen the Blues slip to sixth place in the Premier League table and with only one win in their last seven English top flight matches, they are in real danger of missing out on European football entirely.
As a result, Chelsea may struggle to entice the biggest names in European football. One player who could still be attainable, however, is Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Analysis: Why Jan Paul van Hecke would be an excellent signing for Chelsea
Fans may scoff at the idea of Chelsea raiding Brighton again, but their dealings with the Seagulls have actually often turned out well in recent years. Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and the aforementioned Pedro have been three of Chelsea’s best signings of the BlueCo era, and returning to the AMEX Stadium for Van Hecke would be a sensible idea.
The Dutchman was involved in a training ground altercation with Pedro before the Brazilian left Brighton last summer, but this shouldn’t stop Chelsea pursuing a deal, especially as he could be the best option available on the market.
The Blues are reportedly eager to sign a new first-choice partner for Levi Colwill this summer, with Wesley Fofana’s recent form a real concern, and Van Hecke fits that profile superbly.
Data analytics experts SciSports believe that Van Hecke has the potential to become a “key player” for Chelsea if he joins the Blues this summer and he is rated as one of the best-performing central defenders in the Premier League in 2025-26.
The 25-year-old has all the attributes needed to make the step up to a so-called ‘bigger club’ and he would be the ideal partner for Colwill.
Van Hecke has displayed immense leadership qualities at Brighton, something that is sorely lacking at Chelsea, he has the perfect aggressive temperament for a centre-back and he is a superb box-defender capable of locking down the best strikers in the Premier League.
Furthermore, the Dutchman combines this defensive steel with a truly excellent passing range that would be ideal for Rosenior’s system. He is also no stranger to advancing the ball forward via a progressive carry - which is something Chelsea would lose if Fofana is removed from the starting XI.
Chelsea saw all of this first-hand when Brighton secured a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge back in September. Van Hecke was outstanding on the day, making seven clearances, four clearances, two interceptions and blocking two shots. He also won eight of his 10 contested duels, while completing 90% of his passes, including six out of nine long balls. And his form hasn’t dropped off since that day either.
It has been reported that Chelsea are looking for a centre-back with height and physicality this summer, and Van Hecke certainly ticks both boxes, as well as being excellent in possession too. He’s the perfect signing for Chelsea and it’s a deal the Blues simply must pursue when the window opens.
