Andre Villas-Boas claims Chelsea are still making the same mistake they made when he was manager

Plenty of criticism has been fired at Chelsea’s ownership over the last 12 months, and former manager Andre Villas-Boas believes they are making mistakes the club have been making for years.

There are expected to be protests at Stamford Bridge before their upcoming game against Manchester United as the club continue to slide away from the top five.

There were many who were unhappy with the decision to replace Enzo Maresca with Liam Rosenior, who is now facing the wrath of Chelsea fans as they continue to drop points.

Andre Villas-Boas says Chelsea are making the same mistakes as they did 15 years ago

Villas-Boas has spoken to journalist Nathan Salt regarding the landscape of the club, and he believes the unpredictability has been an issue at the club for as long as he can remember.

He said: “They have changed the landscape a lot, the long-term contracts as well, and the amortisation of the transfer expenditure.

“We can’t say that they have done poorly, they have done it abruptly for sure, but they delivered success to their fans last year by winning the Club World Cup.

“I don’t know how Chelsea fans relate to it, but in reality, they did win two international trophies. Of course, qualification in the Champions League and the Premier League is always going to be their objective, but you can’t argue that they have delivered success and you can’t argue that they have brought the best talents in the world back to Chelsea.”

“Probably too much at the same time and see only thing, which is up to a surplus in talent in the same squad and eventually those big players squad and all the implications that they have tied to long-term contracts.

“So, you know, this is a question that you would have to ask Chelsea members and directors why they do it and why they want so much talent. Of course, they are now with Strasbourg in a very linked relationship and we have seen players going in and out of Strasbourg from Chelsea and from Chelsea into Strasbourg.

“And we see the evolution in the French Ligue 1 of Strasbourg itself, because they have also delivered results. It is a speculative way, you know, I can only look at it from the outside.

“Last year was a success, Maresca was a success, they decided to change during the midseason results. You know, unpredictability and instability has always been the trend at Chelsea in reality.

The former boss didn’t even last a season at Stamford Bridge, and his replacement, Roberto Di Matteo, led the side to Champions League glory in 2012.

He later admitted he was not paid a lot at Chelsea, something that has not been a recent trend at the club.

Chelsea do not want to sack Liam Rosenior

Rosenior put pen to paper on a six-year contract with the club, and will cost the club a serious amount of money if they decide to part ways.

This is likely behind the club’s desire to keep hold of Rosenior, with the Blues briefing he is safe in his job even if they do miss out on Champions League football.

Consistency is certainly required at the club after the frequent managerial changes and player trading, although it is unclear if Rosenior has the support of the fanbase to be the man in that role.

Performances on the pitch are ultimately going to be what a manager is judged on by the fans, and putting an end to a dreadful run when they face United will be a great starting point.
