Liverpool leapfrog rivals Chelsea and Manchester United in race to sign PL defender this summer: Reports

Liverpool have reportedly jumped ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Marco Senesi. The AFC Bournemouth star will be a free agent in the summer and is evaluating his options.

According to a report in iPaper, Liverpool are looking to sign the defender this summer as they want a partner for Virgil van Dijk. The Reds have signed young players like Giovanni Leoni and Jérémy Jacquet, but are keen on signing an experienced player.

Ibrahima Konate's future at the club is still in the balance as he has not penned a new deal. The Frenchman is in the final weeks of his contract at the club and could leave in the summer if an agreement over a new contract is not reached.

The Anfield side tried to sign Marc Guehi last summer and had a deal in place. However, they left it too late, and the London side pulled the plug on Deadline Day as they could not sign a replacement in time.

Guehi was back on the market in the winter window, but the Reds opted against making a move. The Englishman signed for Manchester City and played a key role in the 4-0 win against Liverpool in the FA Cup earlier this month.

Senesi is set to leave AFC Bournemouth this summer, and the Reds want him signed. They see him as the ideal player who can slot into the starting XI under Arne Slot and also not be a hindrance to the development of the two young defenders they have signed.

Arne Slot says Liverpool need to sell to sign players

Arne Slot has claimed that Liverpool will need to sell players to raise funds for the new signings. He added that they have lost three key players for free and it has made thigns challenging for the club in the upcoming window and said:

"Now we are losing Mo and Andy Robertson on a free transfer as we lost Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and this model of the club means we need to sell, usually, to buy. So it's a big challenge. It was already last season. It's going to be a challenge in the summer again."

"This club has also shown many times that this model works and we can be very successful with his model. I think we have signed very good and talented players. Now let's hope they are all fit. That most of them go into their second season in the Premier League. As I've said many times, the future looks really good, especially if we can add a few good signings after the players leaving this summer."

Liverpool's plans to sign Sensei will fit their model, as they will be getting a player for no transfer fee.
