Arsenal have been handed a big boost in signing Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon during the summer transfer window after an update from The Telegraph.
The Gunners are likely to pursue a marquee left winger this summer. They could part ways with either Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard to make room for the new signing.
Mikel Arteta’s side have a long-standing admiration for Gordon, as per The Telegraph. They have now been handed a major boost with the Englishman ‘open’ to leaving Newcastle.
Gordon has not informed his decision to the Magpies, but the Tyneside outfit are aware of the prospect of him heading for the exit door and are preparing for summer proposals.
Bayern Munich are among the player’s admirers, but Newcastle are quite clear that he won’t be sold for the reported £55-60 million fee. They plan to demand £80m plus for him.
Gordon would be an upgrade on Martinelli & Trossard
Martinelli and Trossard had a positive start to the current campaign with regular goal involvements. However, their form has been pretty average during the back end.
Trossard has seven goals and nine assists in the ongoing season, but he has managed just one goal contribution since the turn of the year. His performances have been underwhelming.
Martinelli has fared slightly better than the Belgian ace (11 goals & six assists), but he has tended to fade in games and has struggled to impress when picked from the starting XI by the manager.
In Gordon, Arsenal would have an upgrade on the left-wing duo. The former Everton man has 22 goal contributions this season, playing as a left winger or a centre-forward for Newcastle.
The 25-year-old has exhibited a higher work rate and intensity than the Gunners pair. His pace and dribbling skills on the counter-attack have posed plenty of concerns for the opposition.
In our view, Arsenal should ideally offload Trossard, who is already 31. The Belgian will enter the last year of his contract this summer and should be sold for a reasonable transfer package.
We would prefer to keep Martinelli to compete for places with Gordon. Martinelli’s current deal expires in June 2026, but the club have the option to extend his stay for another 12 months.
Arsenal should open negotiations with the Brazilian over a new contract, provided he is prepared to accept a rotational role behind the marquee left winger signing this summer.
