Manchester United are among the teams linked with signing Morgan Rogers.
Aston Villa could decide to cash in on attacking star Morgan Rogers this summer. He is a player Manchester United and Michael Carrick know well.
Rogers scored a brace in Villa’s 2-1 win over United in December with two spectacular goals to defeat Ruben Amorim’s side.
Michael Carrick managed Rogers at Middlesbrough and played a key role in his development, so it makes sense that United would be interested.
One problem is that Villa would demand a high price. And an expensive outlay on an attacking player might not be in United’s budget considering the investment required in midfield.
Villa would be demanding £80 million to meet their own PSR needs, while also meeting their 20 per cent sell-on clause to Middlesbrough.
And with Rogers’ goal output dropping off in 2026 since his outstanding form early in the season, there are certainly big reasons not to spend big.
But there is an alternative argument to make a move for Rogers.

The case for Morgan Rogers
The immediate question with Morgan Rogers is ‘where does he fit?’.
United would not be spending big money on a back-up for Bruno Fernandes. But the club are looking for a new left winger.
The Times report this is actually Rogers’ favoured role, “Rogers prefers to play on the left flank, he is comfortable playing in several attacking positions.”
Rogers can cut inside from out wide and shoot at goal with his right foot – as United discovered at Villa Park.
United have deployed Matheus Cunha on the left in recent weeks, showing confidence in doing so due to his versatility and intelligence to link up with his teammates. Unai Emery uses Rogers in a similar way.
“He is working tactically, being versatile, and performing very consistently,” Emery said earlier this season.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has also voiced his support for using Rogers as a winger.
Speaking last November, he commented: “It can suit him more to play from the wing. Once we moved him out wide, he seemed more comfortable with his first touches and was able to make more dynamic movements.
“There was more space there than in the half-space.”

Michael Carrick knows Morgan Rogers’ qualities
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick was on the other side of this transfer saga at Middlesbrough, where his side had to cash in on the talented attacker.
Speaking ahead of United’s recent win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, Carrick spoke in glowing terms about Rogers’ attributes.
“You could always see what he was possibly going to be capable of and the potential in terms of his attributes, the way he carries the ball, he can play off his left foot, play off his right foot, create and score goals and really good athletically.”
This does not mean Carrick is going to go out and spend major money on Rogers, but if he chooses to do so, it will be done from a place of knowledge, rather than estimation.
