Rice embraces City showdown:‘It’s beautiful. I can’t wait’

Declan Rice is relishing the pressure of Sunday’s potential title decider at Manchester City, declaring he “can’t wait” for what could be the defining moment of Arsenal’s season.

The midfielder has emerged as the club’s key leader this campaign, recently being chosen by his teammates to captain the side ahead of Gabriel Magalhaes. With Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino all missing significant portions of the season through injury, Rice has stepped up to fill the leadership void.

“They made a decision because Declan has earned it as well,” Mikel Arteta explained after Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon. “The status, the role, the way he’s taking ownership as well in difficult moments. He’s a great leader, he’s a top player for us, and I love the players to take ownership.”

Title-defining moment awaits

----------------------------

Arsenal head to the Etihad Stadium with a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, but recent form has raised concerns. The Gunners slipped to a damaging 2-1 home defeat against Bournemouth last weekend, while City have maintained pressure with impressive wins over Chelsea and progression in the FA Cup.

Rather than shrink from the magnitude of the occasion, Rice is embracing it fully. “It’s beautiful. I can’t wait. It’s why we play the game,” [he told Sky Sports](https://arseblog.news/2026/04/its-beautiful-i-cant-wait-rice-relishing-city-showdown/).

“When you’re a kid watching games and when you’re watching the Premier League as a kid, you see these big matches, these title-defining moments. It comes down to if you’re going to be ready and how much do you want it.”

Revenge mission after cup final pain

------------------------------------

The memory of City’s League Cup final victory over Arsenal in March still stings. Pep Guardiola’s side denied the Gunners their first major trophy since 2020, a defeat that clearly left its mark on Rice and his teammates.

“It hurts losing every final,” Rice reflected. “To see them lift that, it did hurt. There is that fire in the stomach to eradicate that on the weekend.”

The England international acknowledged the respect shown to City after that final defeat but made clear the burning desire for redemption. “With six games to go in the Premier League, we know how big it is. It’s the ultimate test, but it’s why we play this game. Let’s bring it on.”

Arsenal’s record at the Etihad under Guardiola makes for grim reading, with their last victory there coming back in 2015. Before that, you have to go back to a League Cup win in 2010 for their previous success at City’s home.

Sunday represents more than just three points – it’s a chance to change that narrative and prove the doubters wrong. With Rice leading from the front, Arsenal have the opportunity to take a giant step towards ending their 20-year title drought.
