Former Wolves bosses fighting for European honours

Vitor Pereira and Gary O’Neil are fighting for European honours.

Wolves’ two most recent former bosses have led their new clubs to semi-finals in European competitions this season.

While the Molineux club prepare for relegation from the Premier League under Rob Edwards, former head coaches Vitor Pereira and Gary O’Neil are targeting European silverware.

Pereira, who was sacked by Wolves in November and replaced by Edwards, took over at Nottingham Forest in February in an effort to keep them in the top flight.

Alongside the relegation battle, he has also been navigating the Europa League and their 1-0 win over Porto gave them an aggregate victory of 2-1 and sets up a semi-final against Villa.

“It’s important to put smiles on the faces of the supporters, to connect the team with the supporters, to unite the family and to believe,” Pereira said.

“We feel that we are creating something, the spirit to compete, to enjoy, to celebrate and to suffer together and this is the true spirit of a club.”

O’Neil left Wolves in December 2024 and was in talks for a sensational return to Wolves last year when Pereira was sacked, but the Englishman turned the job down.

Instead, he took over at French side Strasbourg in January when Liam Rosenior left for Chelsea.

O’Neil overcame a 2-1 defeat to German side Mainz in the first leg to win 4-0 in the second leg and guide his side to the semi-final of the Europa Conference League, where they will play Rayo Vallecano.

After the game, O’Neil was spotted by Strasbourg fans in McDonald’s and he was interrupted for pictures with supporters as he ordered food on the self service machines.
