Derry minor footballers have been one of the standout teams in Ireland in recent years, and with that success comes expectation.
Three All-Ireland titles since 2020, including back-to-back wins in 2023 and 2024, have established Derry as the benchmark at minor level. As they prepare to begin another Ulster Championship campaign against Down this weekend in Owenbeg, the pressure is on to maintain those standards.
Guiding that effort is Aidy McLaughlin, who spoke to The Irish News about balancing one of the most demanding roles in underage GAA with a fascinating job away from the pitch.
Derry Minor Manager Has Very Interesting Job With Manchester United
McLaughlin also works as Operations Manager for Manchester United in Ireland, a role that blends football, education and community development.

Having previously worked with Queen’s University overseeing sports clubs, McLaughlin now operates across a wide range of programmes, many of which focus on engaging young people through schools and universities, while also developing life skills and educational pathways.
There’s a strong GAA link within the setup too. Michael Langan is involved as a programme delivery officer with the Manchester United Foundation, working alongside McLaughlin on initiatives across Ireland.
With Manchester United set to face Leeds United in Croke Park later this year, interest in the role has only increased, though it remains a full-time commitment behind the scenes, with a team delivering programmes nationwide.

I don’t want to talk too much about it as everybody is torturing me for tickets for Utd’s game with Leeds Utd in Croke Park on August 12
For now, though, McLaughlin’s focus will firmly be on Derry’s latest crop of minors and their efforts to secure another Ulster and All-Ireland title.
Given their recent success, the men from Derry will be hoping for an extended run in the championship, but if their manager’s ability to juggle two high-level roles is anything to go by, Derry look well equipped to deal with the pressure once again.
