A former Sunderland footballer who was caught speeding at 100mph has been banned from driving for six months. Ian Poveda, 26, has been handed the ban after he was caught speeding in his black Range Rover on the A184 in South Tyneside, at around 8.45am on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
The ex-Premier League player was playing for the Black Cats when he was stopped by a Northumbria Police officer, and did not attend the hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court. The London-born Colombia international previously played for Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, and Blackpool.
Poveda has since signed for Internacional de Bogota in Colombia, and the court heard that he already had nine points on his licence at the time, after three previous speeding offences. Brian Payne, prosecuting, explained how a police officer saw the car accelerate away on the dual-carriageway.
On just how fast the winger was travelling when he was stopped, Mr Payne continued: "It is clear that the Range Rover was travelling well in excess of the speed limit. I am going to suggest it was at about 100mph in a 70mph zone."
In mitigation, the police officer signalled for the car to stop, Poveda pulled over immediately, with Janice Hall, defending, telling those in court that her client's speeding was only "for a very short period of time".
Magistrates banned Poveda from driving for six months under the totting up procedure, having imposed another six points on his licence. After admitting the offence, he was also fined £800, with a £320 surcharge and £600 in costs.
